Focus Friday: Food for Thought

I hope you had a shorter week and got to enjoy a break on Labor Day. After all, it’s supposed to be a holiday when we get a break from labor, isn’t it?

Food for Thought

This week is a smorgasbord of provocative quotes and remarks across the landscape of business and life.

There’s an old Hindu saying that goes,

In the first 30 years of your life, you make your habits. For the last 30 years of your life, your habits make you."

In his book, , Henry Cloud offers this crisp insight about communicating with teammates who are not meeting expectations:

You can circumvent a lot of stress-induced bad behavior by not adding to the problem. You can be steadfast and have clear expectations without being harsh, critical, or demeaning. You can reset the terms of the interaction by watching your tone and by remembering the phrase: “hard on the issue, soft on the person.”

Here’s a handy phrase you hear in military circles. It’s a powerful mantra to live by:

Never allow failure to become an option. Adapt and overcome.

Finally, here’s a disturbing observation from Bill Gates’s book, . It speaks volumes about the global demands for energy:

“Here’s the question: How many batteries would they need in order to power Tokyo for three days, until the storm passes and they can turn the turbines back on? The answer is more than 14 million batteries. That’s more storage capacity than the world produces in a decade. Purchase price: $400 billion.”
