Get the right people on the bus … and let them fail?

blue-ball-in-a-mazeThe NY Times runs a regular feature on Sundays entitled The Corner Office, which summarizes conversations with various CEO’s on the topic of Leadership.

There is a consistent theme relating to hiring philosophy, feedback experiences and other “lessons learned” in this series of articles.

In this week’s interview with Deborah Dunsire, M.D., president and chief executive of Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company, two of the major themes that are stressed by Exkalibur and the Exkalibur Leadership Forum are emphasized.

First is the importance of building leadership teams and the pain that persists when shortcuts are taken, with resulting gaps or shortcomings in the quality of your leadership team.

The second is a valuable reminder about the “power of delegation” and how “letting go” is critical to create the right executive development environment AND to allow the CEO can devote his/her time to the role that only the CEO can perform.

Most CEO’s do not hear this enough so use this article as provocation to consider your leadership style and how you can create more effective leaders.
